Detailed information about the Helles type of beer |
|
Helles is a pale beer, which is, like most other beers here, also mainly brewed
in South Germany. Its alcohol content is between 4.6 and 5.6 percent and it has a light golden color. The taste of a Helles (which is short for "Helles Bier" meaning "pale beer") is strong, sometimes slightly sweet and can be compared to the taste of a Pils, just less hoppy and more malty. Similar to Helles is Dunkles, which got a dark color instead. The style of Helles is not very well known outside of Germany with the most famous brand probably being "Loewenbraeu", which is not considered to be one of the top Helles beers by most South Germans. At the munich oktoberfest, "Wiesenbier" a strong version of Helles is often served instead of the typical oktoberfest-style of beer. Hangover risk: High |
